GMU Aquatics & Fitness Center (Fairfax County)

In 1998, George Mason opened the $11.2 million, state-of-the-art Aquatic and Fitness Center, and it is the exclusive home to the Mason Makos Swim Team. At 68,000-square feet, the facility features a 50-meter Olympic Pool, 25-yard exercise pool, diving well, sauna, spa and a fully equipped 3,500- square foot fitness gallery.

The two-pool complex, one of the best on the East Coast, has many outstanding features. The pool is not chlorinated and instead uses bromine ozone, making it easier to breathe -- particularly for those swimmers with asthma. In addition, the temperature and humidity in the pool can be controlled which allows for good air quality.

The depth of the water in the 50-meter pool (ranging from 7' to 13'5") allows for a fast competition pool with low turbulence. Without water jets, returns are evenly dispersed.

Along with excellent lighting and high ceilings, the Aquatic Center contains a state-of- the-art scoreboard. With the Fitness Center upstairs, dry and wet workouts can be easily combined.

Most of our swimmers train in the 50-meter pool which contains:

  • Eight 50-meter lanes; or
  • Twenty-two 25-yard lanes
  • Two moveable bulkheads to accommodate simultaneous use of the pool; and
  • Water depth ranging from 7 feet at the shallow end to 13.5 feet at the diving end

Most of our Mini-Makos train in the 25-yard pool -- perfect for our youngest swimmers as it is:

  • Shallower (3 to 5 feet)
  • Warmer (85 degrees)

Our Fitness Gallery is used by our High Performance swimmers and features:

  • Cybex strength training equipment and free weights
  • Treadmills
  • Tectrix & Stairmaster stairclimbers and exercise bikes
  • Precor elliptical cross trainers
